A Boy Scout who died protecting his classmates during a school shooting in Tacloban, Leyte has been posthumously awarded the Boy Scouts of the Philippines’ highest honor on June 26.
The BSP conferred the Gold Gallantry and Heroism Award, also known as the Medal of Honor, to Chris Lorenz Fabian. The 15-year-old was one of three people killed in the June 22 shooting at San Jose National High School.
Fabian was fatally shot after trying to prevent the gunmen from entering a classroom and harming other students.
“Embodying the purest essence of the Scout Oath to help other people at all times, and the Scout Law to be brave and courageous, [Fabian] has chosen selflessness,” the BSP citation read.
The Medal of Honor is given to BSP members who have “demonstrated heroism in saving or attempting to save life which requires courage, high sense of duty and the practical application of his Scouting Training,” according to the Scouts’ National Awards Guidelines.
Fabian was also honored by his local city council on the same day. The BSP Tacloban City Council issued Board Resolution No. 2026-06-012, which recognizes his act of bravery and regarding him as an exemplary model of Scout Spirit.
The June 22 shooting left Fabian and two others dead, while at least 13 people were injured, after two students in Grade 9 and Grade 10 allegedly opened fire inside the campus.
Authorities are currently investigating the minors and their guardians over motives and access to firearms.
