The TV host clarified her anti-cohabitation remarks were just game show tactics, not personal stance.
Beauty queen and TV host Joy Barcoma found herself at the center of a “live-in before marriage” debate after sharing what appeared to be her firm stance on the matter in GMA Network’s “The People Have Spoken.”
Asked whether couples should live together first to test the strength of their relationship, Joy answered, “Hindi ako sumasang ayon sa pag live-in kasi marami namang paraan para magkakilala kayo ng isang tao.”
She then suggested couples get to know each other while dating, including their “mannerisms,” ethics, values, and how they treat other people.
“Tigilan n’yo na ‘yong pagtira sa ibang bahay. Tigilan n’yo na ‘yong live-in. Live with the parents muna kayo,” she added.
Her remarks quickly divided viewers. Some agreed, with one saying that “physical intimacy can make leaving a relationship with red flags more difficult,” while another pointed out that “not everyone has a loving home to return to.”
Others pushed back, arguing that some aspects of compatibility, habits, responsibilities, and conflict management can only be discovered by actually living together. One viewer even compared the cost of moving out after a breakup with the significantly higher financial and legal stakes of ending a marriage in the Philippines.
But before the debate could get any bigger, Joy stepped in to clarify.
“Hoy! For the sake of discussion lamang ho ito para magkaiba kami ng sagot ng isa pang guest. Hindi ko ho iyan personal stance,” she said.
Joy explained that “The People Have Spoken” works differently from a typical opinion-based talk show. Like “Celebrity Bluff,” guests sometimes answer based on what they think the public would say rather than their personal beliefs.
“Wala naman right or wrong, results are based on audience surveys,” she added.
So, before anyone starts sending Joy relationship advice, it appears the “live-in” answer was less personal conviction and more game-show strategy.
