A customer’s dining experience reignites conversations about food safety and restaurant accountability.
What started as a casual night out in Poblacion turned into a hospital visit for digital creator Ralph (@toonasteak), who said he experienced severe vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhea just hours after eating oysters at seafood restaurant The Pearl Room.
Ralph said he and his group ordered baked, grilled, and raw oysters from the restaurant. Hours later, he reportedly began experiencing stomach discomfort, with symptoms allegedly worsening later that evening, eventually forcing him to seek treatment at Makati Medical Center the next day.
A medical certificate later diagnosed him with diarrhea and gastroenteritis of presumed infectious origin, with doctors advising several days of rest. Ralph claimed he spent around ₱15,000 in medical expenses.
In a series of public posts, he later criticized the restaurant’s handling of the situation, alleging that communication eventually ceased despite earlier discussions on reimbursements and assistance.
The Pearl Room responded in a statement, saying it immediately reviewed the concern and maintained that advisories regarding raw oyster consumption are visibly posted in the restaurant. The establishment also noted that raw oysters may sometimes trigger adverse reactions due to bacteria, viruses, toxins, or individual sensitivity to uncooked seafood.
The issue has since garnered mixed reactions online, with some users citing reviews with similar alleged food poisoning cases. Meanwhile, others argued that oysters are highly sensitive seafood products that may affect people differently depending on freshness, preparation, and personal tolerance.
