But back in the early 2000s, the talent-search craze was just about to take over Philippine television. Shows that promised ordinary Filipinos a shot at stardom began filling the TV sets of Filipino households, turning auditions and competitions into entertainment in their own right.

These programs became launching pads for artists who would eventually become familiar names in Philippine showbiz.

1. ‘StarStruck’ (2003)

Launched by GMA Network in 2003, “StarStruck” became one of the defining artista searches of the era. The show put aspiring artists through weekly challenges in acting, singing, dancing, and other “artista tests,” with the winners receiving talent contracts with the network.

Among the names it helped launch were Jennylyn Mercado, Mark Herras, and Cristine Reyes.

2. ‘Star Circle Quest’ (2004)

ABS-CBN answered the artista-search boom with “Star Circle Quest” in 2004, turning its existing Star Circle talent search into a televised competition. Its first season drew thousands of hopefuls before narrowing the field down to its final questors.

Among its most recognizable alumni were Hero Angeles, Sandara Park, and Joross Gamboa.

3. ‘Search for the Star in a Million’ (2003)
