Cinemalaya faces renewed calls to bring Filipino indie films beyond Manila

Netizens question limited regional access as festival organizers cite costs, logistics and audience development challenges.

As the 22nd Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival runs across Metro Manila, netizens are again questioning why the country’s biggest independent film festival remains difficult to access outside the capital.

“Sana lumaya na sa Manila ang Cinemalaya,” one netizen wrote, questioning why its films cannot be screened in regional cinematheques amid discussions on Filipino cinema being “inaccessible” and that “no one watches” local films.

Another acknowledged the sentiment but noted the financial and logistical challenges, saying Cinemalaya may want to go beyond Metro Manila but “financially can’t,” with costly distribution and an uncertain market. Another urged the government to help make indie films accessible, citing limited marketing budgets.

Glaiza Lee, CCP Media Relations Officer, said the festival wants nationwide reach “just as much—if not more—as the audience does.” She cited past screenings in Legazpi, Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Dapitan, Bacolod, Pampanga, Cavite, Baguio, Laguna, and Pandan, Antique. However, she said only a handful attended some screenings.

This led to CCP Lakbay Sine, bringing Cinemalaya and Gawad Alternatibo films to regions alongside filmmaker talkbacks. Lee stressed that nationwide expansion requires finances, manpower, venues, partnerships, logistics, and audience development.

“The question isn’t whether we want to. The question is how we can make it sustainable—and how we can build it together.”

Running August 6–18, Cinemalaya’s Reel Reflections features 9 full-length and 10 short films. Metro Manila venues include Red Carpet Cinemas at Shangri-La Plaza, Gateway Cineplex 18, and Ayala Malls Cinemas in TriNoma, Manila Bay, Glorietta 4, Market! Market!, and Circuit. Tickets are ₱350, ₱250 for students, with 20% discounts for seniors, PWDs, national coaches, and national athletes.
