Marjorie Barretto breaks her silence after her mother Inday Barretto’s controversial interview and opens up about their strained family relationship.
The Barretto family drama continues to make waves after matriarch Estrella “Inday” Barretto’s tell-all interview with entertainment journalist Ogie Diaz. The latest to react is her daughter, actress Marjorie Barretto, who released a lengthy statement on Instagram to address her mother’s claims.
According to Marjorie, she was deeply hurt and surprised by the “hurtful and untrue things” her mother said about her in the interview. She revealed that shortly after the episode aired, she received messages and calls from friends concerned about the statements made against her.
Marjorie questioned her mother’s claim that they were no longer on good terms, saying they had just recently spent time together during the hospitalization, wake, and funeral of her brother, Mito.
“Was I only dreaming that we were talking, hugging, and comforting each other?” she asked.
The actress also criticized her mother for dragging their non-showbiz relatives into another public controversy while their family was still grieving Mito’s passing. She wondered if the purpose was to “tarnish her reputation to uplift the image of another sibling.”
“Over the years, through all my Instagram posts, you’ve seen me surrounded by my family. In all those photos and videos, have you not seen my mom at our big family events? Was that all just a dream?” she added.
Marjorie also denied her mother’s claim that she was ashamed to invite her to family gatherings. According to her, it was Inday herself who repeatedly requested that their photos together not be posted online to avoid upsetting her sisters Gretchen or Claudine.
“Hearing that from my own mother and hearing it repeatedly over the years was deeply hurtful, even as an adult. My children felt that pain for me, too,” Marjorie said.
“Mom, as God is my witness, you begged me to never fix things with my two sisters so you wouldn’t be left out.”
She went on to say that she has endured emotional punishment from her mother for two decades despite not being a “problematic” child.
“With my mom, if you are not a problematic child, you become the least favorite,” she said.
Referring to the interview as both “false and destructive,” Marjorie said she felt forced to speak up not for herself, but for her children, who were now affected by the family’s public disputes.
“I fought so hard to get to this point. I had no choice. When the going gets tough for the favored child, I am made to suffer for it. She can do no wrong. The favored child is always the victim; the survivors are the villains,” she said. “My silence was no longer giving me peace; it was causing me great pain.”
Despite her disappointment, Marjorie ended her statement with forgiveness and acceptance.
“Mom, I want you to know that I love you. And I have learned to accept whatever kind of love you can give me. Instead of looking for affection and protection from you, I will pour all my energy into being the best mom to my children. I am not a perfect mom, but they can trust me.”
She explained that she decided to break her silence because she had been misunderstood for too long. “When someone close to you distorts the truth in a very public way, it creates an ache that my silence can no longer hold,” she concluded.
Just recently, the Barretto matriarch made headlines after exposing several accusations against her daughter Claudine’s former husband, Raymart Santiago, through an online interview.
