Philippine Airlines buys 15 Boeing 787 Dreamliners in major bet on international growth

The deal includes an option to acquire five more aircraft as PAL prepares to expand its network through a long-term fleet modernization program.

Philippine Airlines is making one of its biggest fleet investments in years, signaling confidence in the future of international travel and the country’s growing role in the global aviation market.

The flag carrier has signed a memorandum of understanding to acquire 15 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, with an option for five more, as part of its long-term fleet modernization program announced during the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom.

The new aircraft are expected to help PAL expand its medium- and long-haul operations while lowering fuel consumption and operating costs through more efficient technology. That could eventually support additional international capacity and strengthen links between the Philippines and key destinations overseas, benefiting tourism, trade, overseas Filipinos, and businesses that depend on global connectivity.

The planned acquisition also marks PAL’s first Boeing aircraft order since 2007, extending an 80-year partnership between the airline and the U.S. aircraft manufacturer.

PAL expects the first Dreamliner to arrive in 2031, with deliveries continuing through 2034.

The order also carries local economic value. Boeing noted that several suppliers with manufacturing operations in the Philippines produce components used in the 787 Dreamliner, supporting jobs and technology-related manufacturing in the country.
