
Philippine financial markets recovered on Thursday as stocks staged a strong rebound while the peso strengthened and moved farther away from its recent record-low territory.
Philippine financial markets ended higher on Thursday, August 20, 2026, as both the stock market and the peso recovered from the previous trading session’s losses.
The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) climbed 80.12 points, or 1.30%, to close at 6,238.46, recovering sharply from the previous trading session’s decline. The index moved back above the 6,200 level, suggesting renewed buying interest after falling sharply below the threshold in the previous session.
Peso moves away from record low
The Philippine peso strengthened, gaining nearly 15 centavos to close at ₱61.67 against the US dollar, recovering from the previous trading session’s decline.
The local currency reached an intraday high of ₱61.70, around 30 centavos stronger than the previous session’s rate, moving farther away from its second-lowest close on record and the ₱61.853 record set on July 24.
Thursday’s session reflected a broad recovery across Philippine financial markets. Local equities rebounded sharply above the 6,200 level, while the peso also strengthened after nearing record-low territory in the previous session.
