Philippine financial markets retreated on Thursday as the stock market ended its longest winning streak in weeks while the peso weakened for a second straight session.

Philippine financial markets closed lower on Thursday, July 9, 2026, as both the stock market and the local currency surrendered ground after recent gains.

The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) fell 51.90 points, or 0.83%, to close at 6,223.87, ending its six-session winning streak. Despite the decline, the index remained above 6,200, indicating it retained much of the ground recovered during its recent rally.

Peso extends decline

The Philippine peso also weakened, slipping 10 centavos to close at ₱61.605 against the US dollar and extending its decline to a second consecutive trading day.

The local currency reached an intraday high of ₱61.64 before settling at its closing rate, around 2 centavos weaker than the previous session’s peak. The latest finish kept the peso within the ₱61 territory, reflecting continued pressure on the currency after its brief recovery earlier this month.

Thursday’s trading marked a pause in the recent improvement across the financial markets. While the PSEi remained above key technical levels despite ending its rally, the peso continued to lose ground, underscoring the mixed sentiment that continues to shape local market performance.
