Veteran writer Jerry Gracio gives life update nearly a month after suffering a stroke

“Halos isang buwan na ang nakakaraan, na-stroke, nagdugo ang isang bahagi ng utak,” he wrote. “Hindi pa rin maigalaw ang kanang bahagi ng katawan, nakadepende kay Mong at sa pamilya sa maraming bagay.”

“Buti na lang kaliwete ako. Buti na lang marami akong kaibigan. Buhay pa sa dami ng mga taong nagmamahal. Salamat sa inyo. Ang hirap mag type! ” he added.

On Aug. 25, Gracio’s family asked the public for financial assistance, citing mounting expenses for his hospitalization, medicines, laboratory tests, and continuing medical care as he began his road to recovery.

Gracio is one of the country’s acclaimed contemporary writers, with work spanning poetry, books, film, and television. He has received multiple Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards and was named Makata ng Taon by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino in 2017.

As a screenwriter, Gracio has worked on films including “Ligo Na Ü, Lapit Na Me,” “Isda,” “Emir,” and “Balangiga: Howling Wilderness,” as well as television projects such as “The Greatest Love” and “A Soldier’s Heart.”

His books include “Aves,” “Apokripos,” “Informal: Mga Piling Personal na Sanaysay,” “Bagay Tayo,” and “Hindi Bagay.”

He also served as a commissioner of the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino representing the Samar-Leyte languages and has been a prominent voice for Filipino writers, workers, and the LGBTQIA+ community.
