GMA Network’s “Born to Shine” premieres March 23, featuring Zephanie and Michael Sager in a musical drama about P-Pop dreams, passion, and rising stardom.
Reunions tend to come with a little nostalgia. In the case of Zephanie and Michael Sager, a whole lot of fan excitement.
The two previously shared the screen in “Sparkle U” seasons “Frenemies” and “Soundtrip,” but this time, they’re stepping into the spotlight together as leads in GMA Network’s upcoming musical drama “Born to Shine,” premiering March 23.
Naturally, their on-screen reunion has reignited curiosity about their real-life dynamic.
Still, both are quick to set the record straight: there was no romance behind the scenes.
Defining their real life bond
When they recently faced showbiz scribes, Michael addressed the question head-on. “Nanligaw? Hindi. Naging close lang talaga kami,” he said with a laugh. “Aminado ako, naging close kami. Masaya siyang maging kaibigan.”
The pair also opened up about their close bond, with Michael admitting that their friendship naturally deepened over time.
“Siguro n’ong time na I moved here in the Philippines, Zephanie became one of my closest friends. Pero wala talaga—work muna kami that time,” he said.
Zephanie echoed the sentiment, adding that admiration often comes with shared experiences.
“It’s normal when you’re working closely with someone, you learn to admire them. I admire Michael for his passion and the way niya hinahabol ang mga pangarap niya. Nakikita ko talaga ‘yon sa kanya,” she shared.
For Michael, reuniting with Zephanie on a major project feels like a full-circle moment.
“I’m really happy for Zeph. Kahit ilang years kaming hindi nagkasama sa project, nakita namin ‘yong growth ng isa’t isa. When we finally shared a scene again, ang sarap lang sa pakiramdam na we’re back doing what we love together,” he said.
Zephanie, in turn, described their reunion as both familiar and new—a creative rediscovery of sorts.
“Ngayon na mas nag-grow na kami, ang saya lang na magkasama ulit kami sa project. It feels like we’re rediscovering our dynamics for the show,” she said.
In “Born to Shine,” Zephanie takes on the role of Jennie, a bright and determined young woman chasing her place in the fiercely competitive world of P-Pop. Like many dreamers, her journey is paved with challenges, sacrifices, and moments of self-doubt.
For the singer-actress, the story hits close to home, especially through its music.
“I can relate to some of the songs, kahit hindi ko pa pwedeng i-share. But there’s one song na parang story ko rin in real life,” she revealed.
Chasing dreams through music
Jennie’s journey is also deeply shaped by her mother, Minchie, played by Manilyn Reynes—a former member of the girl group Rosabellas who gave up her own dreams after heartbreak. Hoping to shield her daughter from a similar fate, Minchie raises Jennie away from the spotlight.
But Jennie, driven by her passion, chooses to carve her own path and pursue music despite the risks.
“Marami pa siyang pagdadaanan,” Zephanie teased.
Helmed by director Rod Marmol, “Born to Shine” dives into the vibrant yet demanding world of aspiring performers. Beyond the glitz and glamour of the stage, the series explores the realities of competition, friendship, rivalry, and romance.
At its heart, the show is about identity, resilience, and the courage to keep chasing one’s dreams, no matter the odds.
The series boasts a stellar lineup of seasoned performers, including Vina Morales, Smokey Manaloto, Tina Paner, Roselle Nava, and Tessie Tomas, whose much-awaited television return adds even more excitement.
Joining them is a new generation of rising talents: Naya Ambi, Gaea Mischa, Mitzi Josh, Chloe Redondo, Angelika Santiago, Aaliyah de Gracia, and Miggs Cuaderno bringing fresh energy to the musical narrative.
With original music woven into its storytelling, “Born to Shine” captures both the thrill and the struggles of building a career in the local music scene, while highlighting the growing influence of P-Pop.
As it premieres on March 23 on GMA Network’s Afternoon Prime, airing weekdays at 2:30 p.m., the series invites viewers to witness the journey of young artists determined to step into the spotlight.
Nanligaw? Hindi. Aminado ako, naging close kami. Masaya siyang maging kaibigan… It’s normal na when you’re working closely with someone, you learn to admire them.
