Netizens flag food safety concerns, inconsistent pet policies.
A pet dog was spotted lying on a table meant for customers at a Zus Coffee branch, drawing criticism online after similar incidents at other food establishments in recent weeks.
A group of customers at Zus Coffee in XentroMall Montalban, Rizal, were seen placing their Shih Tzu on a table as they drank their beverages at the cafe. The customers appeared to be senior citizens.
Threads user Dionel Cruz, who uploaded the photo of the incident, called out Zus Coffee for the supposed lack of staff intervention.
“Ok lang ba sa inyo ‘to? Kasi kami na sana ‘yung next na customer na gagamit ng table pero ‘wag na lang pala,” he said in a post on October 22.
When asked if crew or security guards at the cafe told off the customer, Cruz replied, “Wala ata sila noon.”
Netizens piled on Zus Coffee for supposedly failing to stop the customers, expressing food safety concerns. The callout follows similar incidents reported over the past month at Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, and Bread Talk, where tables and baby chairs meant for human use were used to hold pet dogs.
While no laws specifically penalize the misuse of restaurant facilities or the presence of pets in restaurants, both the restaurant and the pet owner may be held liable for potentially causing health issues for other customers.
Article 2183 of the Civil Code holds pet owners liable for any harm or damage their animals cause. This liability may extend to health issues suffered by others due to an owner’s negligence, including allergic reactions.
The Sanitation Code of the Philippines and the Food Safety Act of 2013 also hold food establishments responsible for upholding hygienic practices and preventing the spread of disease, especially through direct contact with animals.
While Zus Coffee has made no official announcement on its pet policies, pet owner forums have shared that most branches allow pets as long as they are in strollers, cages, and/or diapers. Some pets were reportedly denied entry at other Zus Coffee branches.
