Through FDCP, Leo led a four-day workshop for Star Magic, Sparkle, Star Worx, Aktor PH talents.
Oscar winner Melissa Leo didn’t just visit the Philippines, but also spent several days working closely with Filipino actors.
Through the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), in partnership with FEST Film Lab, the Hollywood actress conducted the intensive workshop, titled “Acting for the Screen and Set” from May 6 to 10.
The program brought together rising talents from Star Magic, Sparkle, Star Worx, and Aktor PH.
For FDCP chair Jose Javier Reyes, the experience left a strong impression. “When she stepped into the function room… I was starstruck. Literally,” he said, recalling his first face-to-face encounter with the Oscar-winning actress (“The Fighter,” best supporting actress winner)
But beyond her credentials, it was Leo’s approach to teaching that stood out.
Reyes described her as “giving, nurturing, compassionate,” noting how she took time to understand each of the participating actors.
“The true measure of a teacher is the selflessness to share… and to encourage young talents to have the courage to find what is good in them,” he said.
Reyes added that more than acting techniques, Leo emphasized something deeper throughout the workshop: humanity and sincerity in performance.
What remained with the participants were not just the lessons and exercises, according to Reyes, but “the importance of being human… and to find the core of sincerity in the heart of every actor.”
Leo has since returned home, but her impact lingered among the young performers she mentored.
“You are indeed more precious than the Oscar that sits in your mantle,” Reyes said. “You have touched the lives of these young performers.”
The workshop formed part of FDCP’s ongoing efforts to help Filipino artists become more globally competitive. This time, with guidance from one of Hollywood’s most respected screen veterans.
Jose Javier Reyes said that more than acting techniques, Melissa Leo emphasized something deeper throughout the workshop: humanity and sincerity in performance.
