Grid instability returns amid peak summer demand.
Residents in several parts of Luzon experienced power interruptions today after the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines raised a red alert status over the Luzon grid due to insufficient power supply and reserves from multiple power plants.
According to advisories shared by Meralco and reposted by UNTV News and Rescue, rotational brownouts lasting up to two hours were implemented in affected areas beginning around 3 PM.
Meralco said affected communities may experience outages between 3:01 PM and 8 PM as the grid operator struggles to maintain enough electricity reserves amid high demand and limited available supply.
The power distributor urged consumers to expect temporary interruptions while authorities manage the situation and stabilize the Luzon grid.
Understanding the red alert
A red alert status is declared when the power supply available for the grid becomes insufficient to meet consumer demand and required reserves, increasing the possibility of widespread outages or manual load dropping.
The development immediately triggered concern online, with many Filipinos expressing frustration over recurring brownouts and the impact of outages on work, businesses, internet connectivity, and daily activities during the intense summer heat.
Meralco advised affected customers to monitor its official social media pages for updates regarding the schedule and duration of interruptions in their respective areas.

Surmounting the May 2026 brownouts
Charge early, use sparingly. Between 10AM and 1PM, ensure all power banks and laptops are at 100%. When the 3PM window hits, switch your devices to "Battery Saver" mode immediately to bridge the potential two-hour gap.
When the power goes out, unplug sensitive electronics (TVs, computers, refrigerators). The power surge that often occurs when the electricity returns can fry circuit boards, leading to expensive repairs that aren't covered by standard warranties.
Consider investing in a small LiFePO4 portable power station. Unlike traditional gas generators, these can be charged via the solar panels, providing a silent and free backup during red alert hours.Â
