Alfred Vargas to Continue Legal Case Against Rob Sy

Manila prosecutors junk complaint for lack of evidence; actor-politician eyes next legal steps: “Hindi pa dito nagtatapos ang laban.”

Quezon City councilor-actor Alfred Vargas said he’s exploring “legal remedies” following the dismissal of the child abuse case that he and his wife, Yasmine, filed against actor Rob Sy and wife, Juvelle Bacosa.

“We have been informed about the decision of the prosecutor,” Vargas said in a statement posted on Facebook on May 28. “While we have yet to receive the official decision, we say with certainty that we respect the law and due process and we will continue to do so regardless of the outcome.”

“In the same light, due process allows us to seek legal remedies. We will exert all available legal avenues to pursue justice for our child,” he added. “Hindi pa dito nagtatapos ang laban.”

On May 27, Sy said the Office of the City Prosecutor of Manila dismissed the case for lack of evidence—preventing it from proceeding to trial. In its 10-page resolution, the prosecutor described the allegations as “merely based on speculation.”

The dispute stemmed from an alleged bullying incident involving the couples’ children. The Vargases claimed that their minor child was “repeatedly pushed and held underwater during swimming training sessions” by another minor, referring to Sy’s child. They said they had asked the Sys to intervene.

Sy has since denied the allegations.

The Vargases filed complaints for alleged violations of the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act against Sy and Bacosa on April 13.

They also filed 20 counts of cyber libel against Bacosa on April 20 over alleged defamatory posts from April 14 to 17.
