PLHIV candidate Miguel Lago steps into Mister Gay World Philippines 2026, using platform to fight stigma and champion safe spaces.

A person living with HIV is stepping onto the national pageant stage—challenging stigma in the process.

Miguel Lago—a six-foot, 40-year-old candidate—is representing the PLHIV community at Mister Gay World Philippines 2026, with the grand coronation set on June 26.

In a video essay posted on X on June 19, Lago revealed he was diagnosed with HIV in 2010—a time when support was scarce and stigma was overwhelming.

HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, attacks the immune system. It’s transmitted through certain body fluids, but modern treatment allows people to live long and healthy lives.

“So you just figure things out while quietly falling apart,” Lago said.

Lago said he’s using the pageant as a platform to advocate for safe spaces where people can openly talk about HIV, mental health, and addiction.

His message is simple: meet people where they are, and allow them to express themselves without fear.

“I know I am not perfect, but I deserve to win because I know how to start over,” he said, reflecting on rebuilding his life multiple times.

Even as he speaks about serious issues, Lago keeps his humor intact, calling himself “hubadero,” “dogshow,” and “socially awkward.”

Outside the competition, he works as a communications professional. He has also spent years in nonprofit work, including with World Vision, Habitat for Humanity, and the Philippine Animal Welfare Society.

As he steps onto the Mister Gay World Philippines stage, Lago isn’t only competing for the crown but also proving to everyone that life after HIV diagnosis can still be bold, unapologetic, and meaningful.
