Pokwang stars in back-to-back film, theater roles this August

The comedienne leads “2 Valid IDs,” makes theater debut in “Tulog Na” in a career-defining month.

Pokwang is set for one of the busiest and most significant stretches of her career as she headlines both an official Cinemalaya entry and her first-ever theatrical production within the same month.

While the veteran actress is earning attention for her dramatic lead role in the Cinemalaya 2026 film “2 Valid IDs,” she is also taking on what many consider an even bigger career milestone—making her long-awaited stage debut in “Tulog Na.”

Produced by Studio A Productions, “Tulog Na: The Musical” casts Pokwang as Rose, a woman who runs a mortuary with her husband, Mal, in a story that unfolds entirely inside a morgue. Adapted from Studio A’s box-office straight play, the musical blends dark comedy, drama, mystery, and romance into a poignant meditation on mortality, regret, forgiveness, and making the most of life before it is too late.

The production marks Pokwang’s first live theater performance after decades in television, film, and comedy. She previously revealed that fellow actress Eugene Domingo had encouraged her as early as 2023 to finally take on a stage role.

Adding another emotional layer to the production is its use of Sugarfree’s beloved OPM classic “Tulog Na,” written by Ebe Dancel. The iconic song serves as the musical’s emotional centerpiece and has been newly recorded for the production by Erik Santos, with production by Jonathan Manalo and Erik Santos and musical arrangement by Jem Florendo.

Directed by Jef Albea and written by Danna Bernardino, “Tulog Na: The Musical” is based on Studio A’s hit straight play, which staged 136 sold-out performances over two years before being reimagined as a musical. The company expects another strong turnout as the production mounts a 16-show run this August at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Blackbox Theater in Circuit Makati.

At nearly the same time, Pokwang will also be seen in the official Cinemalaya 2026 entry “2 Valid IDs,” where she stars as Sylvia, a provincial farmer struggling through bureaucratic hurdles to secure identification documents needed to claim financial assistance for her hospitalized husband. The social-realist drama is directed by Ma-an Asuncion-Dagñalan from a screenplay by Abet Pagdagdagan Raz and co-stars Joey Marquez, Meryll Soriano, and Zaijian Jaranilla.

The overlap of the two projects places Pokwang in the rare position of leading both an independent feature film and a major stage production simultaneously—highlighting a new chapter in her career that showcases not only her versatility as a dramatic actress, but also her long-awaited arrival on the Philippine theater stage.
