How hard is it to get a valid ID?
For the cast of Ma-an Asuncion-Dagñalan’s “2 Valid IDs,” the answer hits close to home.
Lead star Pokwang revealed she still hasn’t received her national ID despite applying. “There are a lot of Filipinos who don’t have an ID. I don’t have my national ID yet. I applied for it in 2021,” she said.
Meryll Soriano shared a similar experience, and pointed out how complicated the process can be. “There are a lot of requirements—bank statement, police clearance, tax certificate… I think it’s complicated, especially for the elderly,” she said.
Even Zaijian Jaranilla keeps it simple: “I just have a license and a passport. That’s it.”
Their real-life experiences mirror the story of “2 Valid IDs,” an official entry to the 22nd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival (Aug. 6–18). The film follows a poor farmer, Sylvia (Pokwang), who must present two valid IDs to claim remittance money for her husband’s (Joey Marquez) treatment, only to realize she has none.
“It’s not hard, it’s just complicated. It’s a systemic problem,” said Marquez, pointing to red tape.
From endless requirements to long lines and travel costs, the cast recalled how securing IDs can feel nearly impossible, especially for those from the provinces and the elderly.
“Like our characters, we have to travel and queue up. We’re hungry,” Pokwang shared.
Despite the frustrations, the film isn’t aimed at criticizing agencies. Instead, it shines a light on a reality many Filipinos face: proving your identity isn’t always simple. Sometimes, it can mean the difference between survival and losing everything.
