Rene Baterbonia family’s tribute merch sparks backlash, mixed reactions online

Fundraising items featuring late student-athlete ignite debate, as critics question limits and supporters defend grieving family.

The family of late Ateneo de Davao student-athlete Rene Baterbonia is facing mixed reactions online after introducing merchandise bearing the late basketball player’s image as fundraising efforts continue.

Photos circulating on social media show items such as ref magnets featuring Rene and even family portraits, prompting debate among netizens over whether the tributes have gone too far.

“May mga kapatid ba si Rene na mas matanda sa kanya? Because if yes, why is Rene still being their breadwinner? Also, what about the father?” one user questioned.

Others were more critical, describing the move as “gatas na gatas na,” “too much,” and “outrageous.” 

One comment read, “Hindi para hadlangan ang paghingi ng hustisya para kay Rene, pero bakit kami magdidikit ng magnet ng ibang pamilya sa ref namin?” while another simply said, “Let the kid rest.”

The discussion comes as videos of visitors flocking to the Baterbonia residence continue to circulate online, with some treating the home like a memorial site. A life-sized statue of Rene, reportedly donated through the help of Bb. Gandanghari, has also become a point of discussion after clips showed some visitors wiping it with handkerchiefs and making the sign of the cross.

The controversy follows actor Lance Carr’s recent criticism of content creators whom he accused of exploiting Rene’s tragic death for online clout and spreading misinformation, calling such behavior “inhumane” and “outrageous.”

As of writing, the Baterbonia family has not publicly addressed the criticism surrounding the merchandise, while the content creators mentioned have also yet to issue statements.
