First two stores at ARCA South and Cloverleaf.
MAKRO’s return to the Philippine retail market is starting to look more tangible, with the brand’s official Facebook page now live as it works toward reopening its doors in the country.
Details on the page remain sparse, although one post teases that something “big” is coming soon. Beyond that, the page has yet to reveal much about what MAKRO has planned for its return.
The comeback itself has been known for some time. Ayala Corporation partnered with Thailand-based CP AXTRA, the operator of MAKRO, to bring the brand back to the Philippines, with the first two stores planned for ARCA South and Cloverleaf.
MAKRO first entered the Philippines in 1996 and eventually grew to 15 stores before its local operations were taken over by SM and the outlets were converted to other retail formats beginning in 2009.
This time, MAKRO is returning to a market where S&R and Landers have already established warehouse-style retail.
For now, the Facebook page is a small but notable sign that the planned comeback is moving closer to the consumer market. What exactly the “big” announcement will be remains to be seen.
