The stars of “Pee Mak PH” embrace the challenge of remaking Thailand’s blockbuster horror-comedy for Filipino audiences.

The upcoming Filipino adaptation of the hit Thai horror-comedy “Pee Mak” is shaping up as Viva Films brings together its complete ensemble for “Pee Mak PH.”

Leading the Filipino remake are Wilbert Ross and Bea Binene, who will be joined by Vandolph Quizon, Jairus Aquino, TJ Valderrama, and Gian Bernardino as the much-awaited “Pee Mak PH” barkada.

During a story conference on Tuesday, Ross and Binene opened up about their excitement, expectations, and the pressure that comes with taking on a project based on one of Thailand’s biggest box-office hits.

“Very WilBea na kasi yung GSOT and ‘Love U Lots’ yearning ng male lead sa TV, so parang I think lalabas at lalabas talaga (dito) yung usual WilBea na nakikita nila sa mga projects namin. Dito, medyo lutang pa ‘yong feelings and mas puppy pa ‘yong love ni Mak,” Ross said.

For Binene, taking on the highly anticipated adaptation comes with a certain level of pressure, especially given the success of the original film.

“Siyempre po, kahit hindi adaptation, kahit na bagong proyekto, there’s always that pressure kasi wala ka naman talaga kasiguraduhan, ’di ba? Hangga’t hindi ka pa napapanood at hindi mo pa nakikita ‘yong feedback ng supporters and ng viewers, the pressure will always be there. And this is a top-grossing Thai film. Other countries did adaptations as well,” she explained.

Despite the pressure, Binene said she is also excited and grateful for the opportunity.

“Aside from the pressure, siguro po ‘yong excitement as well as ‘yong gratefulness to Viva for trusting us and for giving us the chance to be part of this very exciting project,” she added.

The original “Pee Mak,” released in 2013, became one of Thailand’s biggest box-office successes. It reimagined the legendary Mae Nak Phra Khanong ghost story through a mix of horror, romance, and comedy, following Mak as he returns home from war to his wife, Nak, while his friends gradually discover the frightening truth surrounding her.

Ross takes on the role inspired by Mak, originally portrayed by Thai superstar Mario Maurer, while Binene plays his wife, the character at the center of the story’s supernatural mystery.

Ross’ casting also drew attention because of his resemblance to Maurer, who became internationally known for his portrayal of Mak in the original film.

Directed by Victor Villanueva and produced by Studio Viva/Viva Films, “Pee Mak PH” is set to bring the beloved Thai horror-comedy story to Filipino audiences. Its cinema release date has yet to be announced.
