A recent interview with 18-year-old Letran Knights basketball player Chad Gammad has reignited online discussions surrounding relationships with significant age gaps and the responsibility of older partners.

Asked how courtside reporter and media personality Apple David supports him, Gammad said, “She helps me everyday just by being there. She’s very caring of me. She understands that basketball is really important to me.”

The clip quickly drew attention from viewers who focused on Gammad’s age and appearance, with one netizen commenting, “Grabe ka din Apple, ‘di mo man lang hinayaan na i-enjoy ni Chad ang kabataan niya.”

Another defended Gammad’s agency, arguing, “I don’t support Apple, pero hindi ba choice rin naman ni Chad ’yan?” A reply countered, “Kahit choice niya pa ’yan, mas malaki pa rin ang accountability ni Apple.”

The conversation comes amid heightened scrutiny over large age-gap relationships across social media, including the couple behind the accounts “Champ moto” and “Na_No.”

The pair, who visibly share a large age gap, drew widespread attention after posting affectionate content together. One revealing post featured the caption, “Age doesn’t matter as long as you’re with the right person.” Accompanying text overlay on the photo listed “2008” beside the girl and “1982” beside the guy—detailing a 26-year age difference.

Netizens are now pushing for a conversation that goes far beyond whether a relationship is technically legal.

“Hindi ko ma-gets anong thought process ng mga matatanda na nagjojowa ng minor,” one user wrote.

Others pointed out that turning 18 does not automatically erase sharp disparities in life experience and authority: “Okay, legal age na, but it does not automatically make a relationship healthy, equal or free from exploitation.”

The same sentiment was echoed in a broader call for social accountability: “Something can be legal and still be predatory, coercive, inappropriate or deeply exploitative.”

While the ongoing discourse does not automatically label every age-gap relationship abusive, it challenges the public to look past legal technicalities—questioning why an older adult might actively pursue someone barely entering adulthood and demanding deeper scrutiny of the underlying power dynamics.
