Tito P of “Machong Chismisan” said he has ADHD amid public outrage over his Josh Aquino remarks.
The ADHD Society of the Philippines on Oct. 17 stressed that the condition does not automatically cause hurtful behavior—and that it should not be used to excuse actions that harm others.
The statement comes amid the controversy surrounding “Machong Chismisan” co-host Tito P’s remarks about Josh Aquino, the son of Kris Aquino, who is on the autism spectrum. The host drew public outrage over his comments and later apologized, noting he has ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder).
In a statement titled “Disability Is Not a Punchline: Every Person Deserves Dignity and Respect,” the ADHDSP said the controversy highlights the need to address disability-related stigma with sensitivity and respect.
“We extend our compassion to Josh and his family and express our solidarity with the autism community and all individuals and families affected by disability-related discrimination,” the organization said.
The ADHDSP explained that ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect attention regulation, impulse control, and executive functioning. However, experiences vary from person to person, and the condition “does not automatically cause hurtful behavior or define an individual’s character or worth.”
“Understanding is not the same as excusing,” the organization said. “Compassion and accountability must go hand in hand.”
“We can acknowledge the challenges associated with ADHD while recognizing the impact of words and actions and the importance of respectful communication,” it said.
The group also emphasized that ADHD and autism are distinct conditions, both deserving of accurate understanding, respect and inclusion: “Neither should be a basis for ridicule, harmful stereotypes, or assumptions about an individual’s abilities or character.”
The ADHDSP urged media practitioners, content creators, educators, families, and the public to communicate responsibly and use their platforms to promote understanding rather than stigma.
“Disability inclusion begins with respect,” it added. “ADHD awareness begins with understanding. Meaningful change begins with compassion and accountability.”
The controversy erupted after Tito P called Josh “walang kuwenta” during a discussion on “Machong Chismisan” comparing him with his younger brother, Bimby Aquino.
“Si Bimby, sobrang okay na anak. Si Josh walang kuwenta,” the host said.
He also commented on Josh’s reported daily school allowance of ₱3,000, adding, “Tapos nakatunganga lang siyang gano’n.”
Other hosts appeared to join the exchange, with laughter heard during the discussion. The episode was later taken down amid the backlash.
The controversy has also drawn the attention of the National Bureau of Investigation. Director Melvin Matibag said the five hosts had been summoned to appear before the bureau on Oct. 20.
Matibag noted that the hosts’ public apologies would not automatically erase possible criminal liability. He said the investigation could look into potential violations of Republic Act No. 9442, or the Magna Carta for Persons with Disability, as well as cyber libel.
He also said the podcast’s production house could be included in the probe.
1PWD Party-list Rep. JD Castro said his group would file a complaint before the NBI on Oct. 19.
