During a recent media roundtable, Ashutosh Gupta, managing director for India and Asia Pacific at Coursera, noted that equipping professionals with digital skills could add as much as ₱809 billion to the Philippine economy. “Gone are the days when you learn once and never learn again,” he said. “Now it’s about learning every day.”

The rising demand for AI and digital literacy is evident. In the Philippines alone, Coursera reports 2.9 million registered learners and over 30 enterprise clients, while Gen AI courses have accumulated more than 80,000 learning hours in three years. This mirrors a global trend: companies are increasingly investing in online learning to upskill employees efficiently, while professionals are seeking flexible ways to stay competitive.

Personalized learning tools

During the Coursera roundtable discussion, Gupta highlighted several of the company’s recent initiatives to support Filipino learners. These include the integration of Coursera content within ChatGPT, allowing learners to access educational material during everyday conversations, and the launch of Coursera Skills Tracks, which offer curated paths to develop in-demand skills like AI and data analytics. He emphasized that these innovations aim to make learning more personalized, practical, and relevant to the current labor market.

Gupta also shared insights from Coursera’s Course Builder, a GenAI-powered platform that helps educators create and scale high-quality content quickly. With over 4,000 courses developed and more than 28,000 enrollments reported, these tools have demonstrated the effectiveness of online learning programs in helping professionals upskill while giving companies the ability to close skill gaps efficiently. He reinforced upskilling, while relationships with enterprise clients and educational institutions remain a core part of Coursera’s strategy to support lifelong learning across the region.

While automation and AI adoption often raise concerns about job displacement, industry observers emphasize the productivity and efficiency benefits of upskilling.
