Brillante Mendoza calls out ₱12K water bill from abroad while on Amman filmfest jury duty

Director questions spike from abroad as he serves at Amman International Film Festival, joins growing complaints over high utility bills.

Award-winning indie director Brillante Ma Mendoza is among the high-profile personalities who have taken to social media to air complaints over shockingly high utility bills.

For Mendoza, the latest concern is his water bill. He said it reached over ₱12,000, prompting him to publicly question the spike.

The director shared his experience in a post, adding to a growing chorus of consumers raising concerns over rising household expenses and unexpected billing surges.

Notably, Mendoza is not always at home.

The Cannes Best Director is currently in Jordan, serving as a juror at the 7th Amman International Film Festival.

For many Filipinos, turning to social media has become a common way to cope with frustrations over rising costs and daily inconveniences. Posts about unusually high bills, long queues, or service issues often serve as both a personal outlet and a call for accountability, quickly gaining traction as others share similar experiences.

When radar Entertainment reached out to Mendoza about his social media post, it learned that he, along with Palestinian actor Saleh Bakri and Jordanian-Canadian composer Suad Bushnaq, is part of the jury for the Best Non-Arab Film competition, which focuses on debut features by filmmakers from outside the Arab world.

As part of his visit, “Ma’ Rosa,” the film that earned Jaclyn Jose the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival, was screened, followed by Mendoza’s masterclass on film financing and co-production.
