Former “It’s Showtime” contestant revives past controversy as netizens reject comparison

“Sakin nga hindi nag-sorry, kay Johaira pa kaya.”

With that remark, former It’s Showtime “EXpecially For You” searcher Axel Cruz inserted himself into the ongoing controversy involving Vice Ganda and Baby Dolls member Johaira—while also reviving his own past issue with the noontime show’s host.

Axel’s comment came amid mounting calls from netizens urging Vice Ganda to issue a direct apology to Johaira, following remarks that many viewers criticized as racist. Posting on social media, Axel drew a comparison to his own experience in 2024, when he figured in a viral on-air incident with the comedian.

At the time, Vice Ganda confronted Axel after he allegedly attempted to kiss fellow searcher Christine on the cheek without her consent, sparking widespread online discussions about boundaries, consent, and appropriate behavior on television.

The current backlash, meanwhile, prompted Vice Ganda to address viewers on-air, saying: “The last thing we want is to displease you… ina-acknowledge po namin ang inyong sentimyento at humihingi po kami ng paumanhin sa inyo. We will try to do better.” However, some viewers argued that the apology was directed broadly to the audience rather than personally to Johaira, fueling continued criticism online.

Axel’s post quickly drew mixed reactions. While some users said they understood his point, many rejected the comparison altogether. One viral reply read, “Ba’t magsosorry sa’yo eh manyak ka?” Others emphasized that the circumstances surrounding Axel’s controversy differ significantly from the current issue involving Johaira.

As of writing, Vice Ganda has yet to respond to Axel’s remarks.
