Social media personality may have violated the Anti-Camcording Act after allegedly recording and posting footage from the Cinemalaya film.
Social media personality Madam Kilay may have run afoul of the country’s Anti-Camcording Act after posting what appears to be footage recorded inside a cinema while the Cinemalaya film “2 Valid IDs” was being shown.
In a Facebook post, Madam Kilay praised Pokwang’s performance, writing: “2 VALID ID Movie 😭 Grabe ang husay ni Mama @/Pokwang dito lahat makkarelate!!”
Screenshots of the post show footage from the film appearing on the cinema screen. The post had generated more than 10,000 reactions at the time of capture.
Under Republic Act No. 10088, or the Anti-Camcording Act of 2010, it is illegal to use or attempt to use an audiovisual recording device to record or transmit a movie—or any part of it—inside a cinema or other exhibition facility without authorization from the copyright owner or exclusive licensee.
The law covers devices capable of recording audiovisual material, including smartphones.
Importantly, the law states that recording for private or domestic use is not a defense. Neither is a claim of fair use. This means that even footage intended merely for a social media post may fall within the prohibition if it was recorded without authorization.
Those convicted of violating RA 10088 face a fine ranging from ₱50,000 to ₱750,000 and imprisonment of six months and one day to six years and one day.
“2 Valid IDs” is an official full-length entry in the 2026 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. Directed by Ma-an L. Asuncion-Dagñalan from a screenplay by Abet Pagdagdagan Raz, the film stars Pokwang as Sylvia, a poor farmer struggling to obtain identification documents so she can claim money intended for her sick husband.
While Madam Kilay’s post was apparently meant to praise the movie and Pokwang’s performance, good intentions do not automatically exempt a recording from the Anti-Camcording Act.
It remains unclear whether Madam Kilay had permission to record the footage or whether authorities will take action. Without such authorization, however, recording even a portion of a movie while it is being exhibited in a cinema may constitute a violation of RA 10088.
