Vahn Leinard Pascual’s Cinemalaya-winning debut is the lone PH film at the A-list festival.

Vahn Leinard Pascual’s ‘Status: Rejected’ is heading to Estonia for its international premiere at the 30th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, running from November 6 to 22.

The film, which premiered at Cinemalaya 22, follows an elderly widow who longs for love and a better life. After another US visa rejection, she turns to the online world and finds herself swept into a digital romance that challenges her sense of worth, family ties, and dreams of starting anew.

Starring veteran actress Ruby Ruiz, ‘Status: Rejected’ earned her the Cinemalaya Best Actress award, which she shared with Marietta “Pokwang” Subong for ‘2 Valid IDs.’ The film also received the festival’s NETPAC Award for Best Full-length Film.

The film is now set to meet an international audience in Tallinn at the PÖFF Pimedate Ööde filmifestival (PÖFF), one of Northern Europe’s major film festivals and one of the world’s FIAPF-accredited A-list festivals. The festival, which began in 1997, brings international cinema and filmmakers to Tallinn each November.

“Being part of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival is a huge milestone for ‘Status: Rejected,’ especially as it marks our international premiere at an A-list film festival,” Pascual told Radar Entertainment on Thursday. “It makes the experience even more meaningful knowing that we are the only Philippine representative at this year’s festival.”

“Our film explores the Filipino fascination with the American Dream and how deeply it has shaped our aspirations and ideas of a better life,” he said. “But beyond that, I believe it speaks to something more universal: the longing to be loved, to belong, and to feel seen, regardless of age or where we come from.”

The international premiere also holds personal significance for Pascual, whose debut feature is now traveling beyond the Philippines.

“On a personal level, this still feels surreal to me,” he said. “Europe has always been one of my dream destinations, and I never imagined that I would get to visit it because of a film I made.”

“Having my debut feature film travel this far is something I’m genuinely grateful for, especially knowing how much hard work, trust, and sacrifice went into making it,” he added. “I’m also incredibly grateful to Cinemalaya for giving our film its first home. And also I share this milestone with our producers, Black Cap Pictures and Clever Minds Productions, and our entire cast and crew, who believed in this story and helped bring it to life.”
