President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a state of national energy emergency on March 24, creating a crisis committee directing energy authorities and government agencies to come up with temporary solutions and provide aid amid global oil supply woes.
Lawmakers have also pushed for shorter mall hours as a short-term fix to reduce energy consumption in light of the declaration.
Major mall chains
Mall chains by major property developers have all announced shorter hours for their branches nationwide, starting March 30.
SM Supermalls will operate from 11AM to 9PM on weekdays (Monday to Friday) and 10AM to 9PM on weekends (Saturday and Sunday).
The chain advised customers to check the social media accounts of their local SM malls for additional information.
SM Markets based in malls have also changed their schedules. SM Supermarket and SM Hypermarket branches will be open from 11AM to 9PM on weekdays and 9AM to 10PM on weekends. SM Savemore stores will operate from 11AM to 9PM on weekdays and 10AM to 9PM on weekends.
