This new anti-chismosa ordinance fines violators up to ₱1,500 for gossip

A South Cotabato barangay is cracking down on malicious rumors and unfounded stories with fines and public apologies.

Gossiping is usually dismissed as harmless neighborhood chatter, but spreading malicious rumors can now be treated as a violation under a new barangay ordinance in South Cotabato.

Barangay Landan in Polomolok introduced an anti-gossip measure after repeated community disputes were traced to false information, malicious gossip, and unfounded rumors that damaged residents’ reputations.

Its Barangay Ordinance No. 8, Series of 2026, aims to discourage residents from spreading harmful stories and encourage them to address concerns through proper communication.

Barangay officials said several disputes brought before them originated from false stories, forcing local leaders to spend time settling misunderstandings that could have been avoided.

The measure does not prohibit freedom of expression, with the barangay clarifying that it specifically targets malicious gossip when sufficient evidence shows that a person was responsible for spreading it.

A first offense carries a ₱1,000 fine, while a second offense carries a ₱1,500 fine, with violators also required to issue a public apology on social media when evidence shows their responsibility.

The Sangguniang Bayan of Polomolok approved the ordinance on July 10, 2026, authorizing its implementation throughout Barangay Landan.

No formal complaints had reached the barangay since the measure was approved, which officials said could indicate greater awareness of the ordinance and its penalties.

The unusual measure highlights how something as ordinary as neighborhood gossip can escalate into disputes serious enough to require barangay intervention.
