From tipping right to runway etiquette: 10 must-know drag show rules every first-timer (and regular) should follow.

Ready to witness some fierce lip-syncs and death drops?

This Pride Month, attending a drag show is an electrifying experience filled with hard-work in art, expression, and gag-worthy talent. But before you step into the venue, there are a few unspoken rules you need to know to ensure both you and the performers have the best night possible.

Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned regular, here is your ultimate etiquette guide to surviving and slaying your next drag show.

1. Look, listen, and learn

You came for a show, so give the dolls your full attention! Show some enthusiasm for the talent right in front of you. Keep your phones strictly for pics, fan cams, or emergencies—don’t be caught scrolling or playing games while the queens are performing.

2. Tip your queens

Show some love and make it rain! Any amount is deeply appreciated. Cash is highly preferred (you can usually ask the bar to break your bills), but digital options might be available. Just remember to hand over your tips respectfully. Never tease the queens or dangle your money at them.

3. Respect, periodt

All human beings deserve basic decency and respect. Drag is an art form of expression, and a creative outlet for performances and/or statements. Every space should be a safe space for all, especially in a drag show. There should be zero tolerance for harassment or discrimination for both queens and audiences.

4. Look, but strictly no touching

Respect their personal boundaries. Never grab a queen, pull their hair, or touch their garments without their explicit permission. They are performers, not props. Keep your hands to yourself and admire the mug from a safe distance, or be blinded with arresting beauty.

5. Match their energy and make some noise

Drag shows feed off the audience’s vibe. Don’t just sit there in silence. Sing out loud, scream, clap, snap, and let the dolls know they are serving. If a queen does a reveal or a sickening split, hype them up and give them the loud reaction they deserve.

6. Don’t be the main character (unless a queen calls you)

The spotlight belongs to the queens, so let them shine. Vibe with the performance and don’t try to steal the scene. Keep your physical boundaries and stay off the stage unless a queen explicitly invites you up (and only if you’re comfortable with it—consent is key!).

7. Clear the runway

When the queens are working the crowd, give them room to perform, twirl, and do their stunts. Don’t block the aisles or crowd their space. If they are coming toward you, step back and let mother pass!

8. Take pics, vids, and tag them

Take all the photos and fan cams you want, but be mindful of using blinding flashes. Most importantly, upload your clips and tag the queens—it helps boost their online presence and gets them booked.

9. Support the dolls—buy merch

Drag is expensive, and these artists invest heavily in their craft. Aside from tipping, dropping some cash at their merch booth is one of the best ways to support local drag. Grab a fan, a shirt, or a print before you head home!

10. Slay the night and have fun

At the end of the day, drag is a celebration of queer joy and art. Let loose, grab a drink, mingle with the community, and live your absolute best life. Enjoy the show and have a sickening time!
