Kids and teens placed into curated game pools as new age-based account rules take effect in June.
Roblox is rolling out a new age-based account system that will change how younger users access games on the platform in response to government directives in the Philippines that pushed for stronger safeguards for minors or possible restrictions if platforms failed to comply.
Starting early June, users under 16 will be grouped into two account types. Roblox Kids will cover ages 5 to 8, while Roblox Select will apply to ages 9 to 15. Each comes with preset limits on game access, communication features, and parental controls, based on verified age checks or parent confirmation.
The update follows regulatory engagement with Philippine authorities, including the Department of Information and Communications Technology and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center, which had raised concerns over child safety online and signaled tighter action, including potential blocking, if platforms did not implement stronger protections.
The new tiers: Kids vs. select
Instead of an open catalog, younger users will now be placed into curated pools of games filtered through content ratings and internal review systems. Roblox Kids accounts will only access minimal and mild-rated experiences, with chat disabled by default. Roblox Select accounts will extend access up to moderately rated content but still within a controlled selection.
This builds on earlier safety measures from Roblox, including facial age checks for chat access, which the company says have already been widely adopted across its global user base.
Accounts will automatically progress as users age, eventually transitioning into standard access at 16, where restrictions are lifted.
In the Philippines, where online gaming functions not just as entertainment but also as a primary social space for younger users, the changes are likely to affect how interaction happens inside these digital environments, especially for parents who rely on platform tools for supervision.
Expanded parental controls
Roblox is also expanding parental controls, allowing more granular blocking of specific games, chat management, and approvals for restricted content. Later this year, it plans to align its ratings system with the International Age Rating Coalition framework, which is expected to standardize how games are classified across regions.
The company has also opened applications for its first Teen Council in Asia, bringing younger users into discussions around safety and platform design.
For developers building on Roblox, especially smaller studios, tighter filtering may affect visibility among younger audiences, while also raising the importance of clear content labeling and compliance with evolving safety requirements.
Roblox says the update is part of its broader effort to maintain a safer environment for younger users while preserving its creator-driven ecosystem. How it plays out will depend on how consistently the system works once fully implemented.
