Backed by years of large-scale efficiency efforts, SM shares simple habits that can reduce energy waste and monthly power costs.

Over the years, SM Supermalls has implemented its energy-efficiency strategy at scale, deploying solutions ranging from rooftop solar installations to smart cooling systems that help keep large mall spaces comfortable while managing energy demand.

Now, the mall giant is sharing some of its tried-and-tested, “mall-tested” energy-saving practices that households can also adopt to help them reduce their electricity costs, minimize energy waste, and support a more sustainable daily living.

The ‘Active Use’ rule

One of the simplest ways to save energy is also one of the most effective: switching off lights and appliances when they are not in use. This small but intentional habit reflects a broader mindset of responsible resource use while helping lower electricity costs and reduce wear and tear on household appliances.

Devices left on standby can also create what experts call “phantom loads,” which may account for around 5% to 10% of residential energy consumption. Unplugging appliances at the end of the day or using UL-certified power strips to help prevent electrical hazards can help reduce monthly energy bills.

Check energy labels

According to the Department of Energy, consumers are encouraged not only to use electricity efficiently but also to choose products and appliances that meet recognized energy-efficiency standards.

Under the Philippine Energy Labeling Program (PELP), the DOE uses a five-star energy rating system for energy-consuming products. The label helps consumers make informed choices at the point of sale—the more stars on the label, the higher the energy efficiency, with five stars representing the highest efficiency and three stars indicating average performance.

Solar energy for the home

For SM Supermalls, rooftop solar installations help ease pressure on the power grid while supporting reliable operations for its communities. Since its first installation at SM City North EDSA in 2014, the initiative has expanded across 69 malls, showing how onsite renewable energy can become part of everyday operations.

On a smaller scale, solar home systems also offer households a practical way to reduce dependence on the grid while helping lower monthly electricity bills. Investing in professional installation, regular maintenance, and proper fire-safety measures is key to preventing electrical hazards and ensuring long-term reliability at home.

As solar technology becomes increasingly accessible, it is emerging as a practical option for meeting everyday household energy needs.

These practical energy-saving strategies can help support a more sustainable future at home. Through the SM Green Movement, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. continues to highlight how small, consistent energy-saving habits can create a meaningful collective impact—helping move the country toward a more energy-efficient Philippines.
