Viral performances meet online backlash as artists face questions on accountability and roles in politically linked events.
Kaogma Festival 2026 made history after drawing record-breaking crowds, with more than 153,000 attendees gathering for BINI’s highly anticipated P-pop Night performance on May 30.
According to the local government of Camarines Sur, the festival’s livestream also surpassed 1.1 million views, while daily attendance consistently exceeded 70,000 throughout the celebration. The figures cemented Kaogma’s status as one of the biggest provincial festivals in the country.
Yet beyond the impressive numbers and viral performances, the festival also became the center of an ongoing debate surrounding the participation of artists and personalities in the event.
20 long ass years that Villafuertes remained in power and we’re putting the pressure on the artists that were invited FOR THE FIRST TIME to perform at the festival–Why?

How does this become the sudden talk of the town if Kaogma festival has been long existing way before pa… https://t.co/Bl8fGz3TTX
Days before Kaogma, host and content creator Joy Barcoma addressed criticism she received for accepting a hosting gig at the festival.
In a post on X, Barcoma argued that advocacy should not be measured through “moral absolutism,” saying people can continue advocating for accountability while still working within existing systems.

A lot of people are calling me out because I accepted a hosting gig in a province that allegedly alloted P75M for their festival. There were demands that if we’re (artists) really true to our advocacies, then we shouldn’t have accepted it.
She added that refusing the project would not have stopped the event from pushing through and stressed that change can also come from engaging with systems rather than completely detaching from them.
Her remarks sparked discussion online. Critics, including some residents of Camarines Sur, argued that participation in Kaogma is not politically neutral due to the festival’s association with the province’s long-standing political leadership.
Others, however, defended Barcoma and BINI, pointing out that the festival has existed for years before their involvement and that accepting a performance or hosting engagement does not automatically translate to endorsing politicians.
As Kaogma Festival celebrates its most successful edition to date, conversations surrounding accountability, advocacy, and the role of artists in politically charged spaces continue long after the stage lights have dimmed.
