The Disney voice icon opens up about RPG obsessions, Nintendo roots, and why gaming keeps her feeling young.

Netizens may just have learned that Lea Salonga is an avid gamer! The Tony Award-winning theater actress revealed during an episode of “What a Life” podcast her latest console obsession, the dark fantasy RPG “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.”

In the conversation with Thai content creator Woody, Lea kept the “why” simple — “It keeps me young.”

Even so, she warned gamers interested in “Clair Obscur” to avoid hard attachments with the game’s characters. Unfortunately, Lea learned it the hard yet laughable way like most gamers.

“I was always gaming even as a kid with these little Game & Watch things,” Lea admitted, starting out her gaming journey back in the 80s. “When I did Miss Saigon on Broadway, someone lent me a Nintendo Entertainment System.”

After consistently playing “Super Mario Bros.” on the NES, Lea moved on to different console systems, completing other fantasy RPGs such as “Final Fantasy XVI,” “Persona,” “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey,” and “God of War.”

Beneath the singing voice of Princesses Jasmine and Mulan is a true, hardcore gamer, who confesses: “It’s nice killing things that are evil.”

When she’s not battling virtual villains, Lea is set to perform at the “Opening Night at the Bowl: Best of Broadway” on June 20, alongside fellow Tony winner and Filipino-American theater actor Darren Criss.
