Netizens question irony as university with multimedia arts program highlights AI-created images instead of student work.
A promotional Facebook post by Far Eastern University–Institute of Technology (Far Eastern University–Institute of Technology) featuring AI-generated portraits of students has drawn criticism online after netizens pointed out ethical and environmental concerns being raised against the university.
The school recently shared the photos taken during its FEU Tech × OpenAI Campus Launch, describing the portraits as students “reimagined through the lens of AI.”
Many called the move ironic for an institution that offers creative and multimedia programs, describing the contradiction of promoting AI-generated art in a school that trains future creatives and multimedia practitioners.
Users also argued that a technology-focused university should encourage human creativity rather than rely on generative AI outputs for visual content.
Others questioned why AI-generated images were being highlighted instead of student-made work, while some also raised concerns about the environmental implications of generative AI systems.
Following the backlash, FEU Tech restricted who could comment on the Facebook post after online discussions intensified.
As of writing, the university has not released a statement addressing the criticism or the concerns raised by netizens.
