Netizens clash online over a former teacher’s proud post.
Alex Eala’s pride burns steady as Filipinos continue to celebrate her success. Among them is a thread user who proudly shared her past as the Wimbledon star’s former teacher.
“PROOF LANG NA NAGING STUDENT KITA @alex.eala !!!!” the thread user wrote.
The post drew sarcastic responses, with critics pointing to the tendency to “milk” Eala’s recent win. One user retorted: “Kakilala ng kilala ko ang kilala ni Alex Eala na pumunta dun sa kilala niya kaya dun niya rin nakilala ung kakilala ng kilala ni Alex Eala.”
Similar reactions surfaced on Facebook and X, where users noted Wimbledon’s social accounts had increased their Eala content following her victory.
Replies to these critics, however, rallied behind the former teacher’s emotion for Eala’s win. “Bakit may hate comments? Tayo ngang nanonood / nabasa lang ang winnings nya sa news e naproud na, what more pa yung nagkaroon ng short or personal encounter sakanya,” and “Ramdam ko ang saya mo, ma’am!” two netizens remarked.
The former teacher recalled that Eala’s dedication to tennis often led to class absences, but described her as “mabait” and “matalino.” She also noted that Eala had been assigned class number 32 — coincidentally the same as her world ranking.
Just a year ago, Eala visited her alma mater, Colegio de San Agustin‑Makati, where she was warmly welcomed by students and faculty. She received a Sto. Niño as a blessing for her well‑being and future endeavors.
Eala’s upset win over defending champion Iga Świątek has Filipinos rallying behind the tennis prodigy despite mixed reactions, as she faces Italy’s Jasmine Paolini today for a quarterfinals berth.
