Major titles at $69.99 may cost at least ₱4,300, excluding fees.

The ultimate “diskarte” for Filipino console gamers has long been buying physical discs. From discounted copies at DataBlitz to vouchers and resellers online, physical media has served as a way to bypass rigid digital pricing in gaming.

But industry shifts—particularly Sony’s 2028 move toward a digital-only ecosystem—threaten to close that option.

Unlike PC gamers who benefit from a highly competitive ecosystem, console players are locked inside what industry analysts call a “Walled Garden.” On platforms like Steam, publishers offer Philippine regional pricing to match local purchasing power, as consumers choose between competing storefronts.

Sony’s PlayStation Network, meanwhile, operates as a pure monopoly. The lack of a dedicated Philippine region means Filipinos are treated as foreign consumers, stripping them of localized discounts and forcing them to rely on a single digital storefront.

With major titles now standardized at $69.99 and above, Filipino players are forced to absorb currency conversion costs. Including exchange rates and bank fees, a single digital game can exceed ₱4,300.

Physical discs, by contrast, remain subject to retail competition, allowing cheaper day-one prices through local and online sellers.

The shift to digital distribution is also changing how ownership is perceived. Some modern formats, such as Nintendo’s “game-key cards,” function only as download access keys rather than containing actual game data.

This reflects a broader industry move where physical media is increasingly reduced to licensing tools rather than standalone products.

In 2024, Ubisoft’s shutdown of “The Crew” reignited debates on digital ownership after players lost access despite purchasing the game, underscoring how digital licenses operate under terms that define software as “licensed, not sold.”

For Filipino gamers, the concern is less philosophical than practical: Without physical resale markets or regional pricing, gaming gets more expensive.
