Her solo exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the winding paths and hidden destinations of life.
Life rarely follows the path we imagine.
The road we carefully plan can suddenly give way to unexpected detours, heartbreak, uncertainty, or moments of grace that change everything. It is this deeply human experience that visual artist Angelica So explores in “The Hidden Gate,” her newest solo exhibition opening on July 11 at 5 p.m. at Art Verité in Shops at Serendra, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.
Centered on the theme “Of Passages,” the exhibition presents life not as a straight journey toward success, but as a winding network of choices that shape a person’s character, faith, and purpose.
In her exhibition notes, So reflects on the belief many people grow up with—that studying hard, being kind, and working diligently will naturally lead to a good life. Reality, she says, is often far more complicated. Even the most responsible and compassionate people can experience betrayal, financial hardship, job loss, or sudden life-changing events beyond their control.
Yet amid life’s unpredictability, the exhibition offers a message of hope.

Drawing inspiration from the classic “Choose Your Own Adventure” books, So portrays life as an endless series of passages, where every decision opens a new path with consequences that may be anticipated or completely unforeseen. By “beginning with the end in mind,” she encourages viewers to remember who they ultimately want to become, regardless of the obstacles they encounter along the way.
The exhibition also introduces a new figure in So’s growing artistic universe: Theotokos, represented by the gumamela or hibiscus. The flower symbolizes the fleeting nature of human life, blooming beautifully before fading, reminding viewers to treasure every present moment. Theotokos, traditionally associated with the Virgin Mary as the “God-bearer,” also represents the connection between the human and the divine—a passage toward grace and hope.
These ideas come to life in So’s dreamlike paintings of lush gardens, meandering paths, blooming flowers, and peaceful landscapes. Each canvas serves as both a visual escape and an invitation to reflect on one’s own journey through life.
The exhibition’s title, “The Hidden Gate,” serves as a metaphor for the destination awaiting every traveler. No matter how many twists, loops, or unexpected turns life presents, So suggests that every passage ultimately leads toward something greater—a reminder that hope, purpose, and humanity can still be found at the end of the path.
