Content creator recalls parents’ reaction as he opened up about identity and growing up
Internet personality Baus Rufo is going viral after sharing a candid story about a childhood crush that came at a time when he was still questioning his sexuality.
In a clip from his conversation with cohost Tuesday Vargas, Rufo recalled having a “super crazy crush” on a girl when he was in Grade 6 up to his first year of high school, even though he said he had always liked boys.
“I never had a girlfriend, but I had a super crazy crush on a girl,” Rufo said. “I even bought her flowers.”
The moment took a humorous turn when Rufo revealed how his parents reacted upon learning about the crush.
“When my parents found out that I had a crush on a girl, they were so all out. Like, ‘buy her that,’ ‘give her chocolates,’ ‘give her flowers,’” he said, laughing. “I guess it’s because they thought, ‘this is our chance to not have a gay child.’”
Rufo punctuated the story with a punchline: “Well, guess what? You’re wrong, mom and dad.”
In the same exchange, Rufo reflected on how that period in his life coincided with his own internal questions about identity.
“I think that time, I was also questioning my sexuality,” he said, adding that he nonetheless appreciated the support he felt from his parents. “It was so nice to feel my mom and dad’s support and appreciation.”
Vargas responded by affirming that Rufo’s parents are likely proud of him regardless of his journey.
The clip, which Rufo captioned “life story,” has since gained traction online, resonating with viewers who relate to the complexities of growing up and understanding one’s identity.
Rufo, known for his humor and candid storytelling, is widely regarded as an important Filipino gay figure for using his platform to normalize queer experiences, spark conversations about identity, and challenge stereotypes in mainstream digital spaces.
