The Philippines’ game development industry is forging its own identity as indie developers weave local culture, folklore, and everyday Filipino life into distinctly homegrown games.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) recently put the spotlight on several Filipino-developed indie games through its Malikhaing Pinoy Program, a 2023 initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s creative industries.

While each featured game offers a distinct gameplay experience, they share a common theme: showcasing Filipino culture and traditions through compelling, story-driven narratives.

There’s “Until Then,” developed by Polychroma Games, which explores the coming-of-age journey of a Filipino student through the everyday experiences of local youth.

“Hapunan” by Yikon Games, on the other hand, follows a balut vendor in a psychological horror story infused with Filipino culture and social commentary.

Meanwhile, Leoned Andrew Tumbaga’s “Agnostiko Origins” is a fantasy role-playing game that reimagines Philippine history and folklore.

Lastly, there’s “Water Delivery,” where developer Lemuel Malabuyo transforms an ordinary water delivery route into a psychological horror experience set in familiar Filipino communities.

The emergence of Filipino indie games through initiatives like the Malikhaing Pinoy Program helps raise the profile of local creatives by showcasing stories rooted in Philippine culture that resonate with Filipinos.
