It’s not just the pension that’s lacking; it’s inclusion.
In the Philippines, our retirement plan has always been family. But with 10.98 million seniors now among us growing faster than ever, the old ways are being put to the test. We see 3.4 million silver dividend workers running sari-sari stores and consultancies to keep the family dream alive.
It’s a bittersweet reality. While it’s inspiring to see them remain productive, the truth is that 77% of our seniors still rely on relatives just to survive. As life expectancy climbs to 82 for women and 78 for men, the sandwich generation — those caring for both kids and parents — is feeling the squeeze. We are living longer, but are we living better?
Recent laws like the ₱1,000 social pension hike and the Philippine Geriatric Center Act are steps in the right direction. But let’s be real: Is a thousand pesos enough for maintenance meds and the rising cost of rice? We are at a crossroads where “utang na loob” is meeting the harsh reality of inflation and a digital world that’s leaving our elders behind.
Our seniors are our pillars. To truly honor them, we need more than just milestone cash gifts at age 80 or 90. We need a system where aging doesn’t feel like a financial burden but a dignified reward for a life well-lived.
