Ogie Alcasid exit opened spots for 4 new ‘Bubble Gang’ regulars

Comedians recall pressure and support after joining long-running gag show post-2013 transition.

More than a decade after Ogie Alcasid left “Bubble Gang,” cast members Betong Sumaya, Chariz Solomon, and Valeen Montenegro looked back on how the comedy icon’s departure unexpectedly changed their careers.

During an interview on Toni Gonzaga Studio’s YouTube series “Ang Tanong,” the trio admitted they felt the pressure of joining the long-running sketch show as it transitioned from its pioneer era following Ogie’s exit in 2013.

Despite the challenge, they remembered Ogie not for the void he left behind, but for the support he gave them as newcomers. “Nagpapasalamat kami kay Kuya Ogie… Kuya Ogie, thank you so much from the bottom of my heart,” Betong said.

Chariz then joked: “Pag alis niya, ilan tayong na-regular?”

“Apat,” Betong replied, referring to himself, Chariz, Valeen, and Paolo Contis, who all became regular cast members following Ogie’s departure.

The comedians also described Ogie as the show’s “Kuya,” saying he never made younger performers feel intimidated despite being one of the show’s founding cast members. Instead, they remembered him as generous and supportive throughout their early days on the program.

Ogie, who starred on “Bubble Gang” from its 1995 premiere until his departure in 2013, remains one of the sketch show’s most recognizable pioneers alongside longtime collaborator Michael V.
