Courses begin August 3, ahead of Buwan ng Wika celebrations.
The University of the Philippines Open University is offering free online courses on Filipino grammar and academic writing through its Massive Open Distance e-Learning platform starting August 3.
The UPOU is currently accepting enrollees for Panimulang Kasanayan sa Gramatikang Filipino and Batayang Kasanayan sa Akademikong Pagsulat sa Filipino.
Designed by the UPOU Faculty of Education and the Sentro ng Wikang Filipino-UP Diliman, the first course covers correct word and punctuation usage, as well as sentence construction and organization.
The second course focuses on developing basic Filipino writing skills for academic contexts, including writing and presenting strong arguments.
The courses are open to anyone who creates an account on MODeL after initially being offered to senior high school and college students in 2024.
While the courses are self-paced, they will only be available until Aug. 28, after which enrollment will close.
MODeL also offers other courses throughout the year on topics such as business analytics and child development, with e-certificates issued upon completion.
Earlier this month, radar featured Andrei Clyde Arellano, a UP Institute of Mathematics graduate who wrote the first mathematics thesis in Filipino.
In a July 16 Facebook post, Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino shared Arellano’s message for those who want to use Filipino or their mother tongue for research.
“Sana po kilalanin natin na ang mga wika natin ay handang-handa naman na talaga pong talakayin ang mga ganitong bagay… Tapos gamitin [natin] ito sa pagsusulat,” he said, adding that writers should not shy away from incorporating borrowed foreign words when needed.
In June, the Philippine Institute for Development Studies held a webinar presenting studies on language of instruction in schools. The studies found that students tend to perform better when the language used in teaching matches their mother tongue.
“Maganda po na nagkakaintindihan yung mga bata tsaka yung mga teacher nila,” PIDS Senior Research Fellow Michael Abrigo said.
