The title caps off a breakthrough season for the young athlete.
Alex Eala has etched her name into Philippine sports history after becoming the first Filipino to capture a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour singles title, defeating World No. 3 Jessica Pegula to win the 2026 Mubadala DC Open in Washington, D.C.
The 21-year-old tennis star completed a stunning comeback to beat the tournament’s top seed, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, in a weather-delayed final that was finished over two days.
The championship match was suspended on Sunday due to heavy rain and lightning with Pegula leading 6-4, 2-1 in the second set. When play resumed on Monday, Eala seized control of the match, winning nine straight games to close out the contest in dominant fashion, including a flawless 6-0 third set.

The victory marks the biggest achievement of Eala’s professional career and her first title on the main WTA Tour. She had previously won WTA 125 tournaments in Guadalajara in 2025 and Birmingham earlier this year, but the Washington triumph is her breakthrough at the elite WTA 500 level.
Eala’s road to the trophy was nothing short of remarkable. She defeated Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in the opening round, defending Washington champion Leylah Fernandez in the Round of 16, World No. 10 Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the semifinals, and finally World No. 3 Pegula in the championship match.
The title also caps off a breakthrough season for the Filipina, who has consistently produced career-best performances, including a historic run at Wimbledon and victories over several of the world’s top-ranked players.
With the victory, Eala is projected to climb to a career-high World No. 20 in the WTA rankings, strengthening her position ahead of the upcoming U.S. Open and cementing her status as one of the fastest-rising stars in women’s tennis.
