QC gov earns praise for supporting local artists with free Komiket event

Quezon City Public Library will host a free afternoon of book signings, comics readings, and meet-and-greets with Filipino creators.

That is how a fan applauded the local government unit (LGU) of Quezon City, who is receiving major props from the creative community after the Quezon City Public Library was announced as the venue for an upcoming free event hosted by Komiket PH.

Scheduled for Saturday, August 22, from 1 PM to 4 PM, the gathering aims to celebrate and promote local Filipino komiks and their talented creators.

Fans and netizens quickly took to social media to commend the Quezon City LGU for stepping up and actively offering its public library space to bolster engagement with local art.

A post on X (formerly Twitter) by fan account @/bayaniserye2 highlighted the move as the ideal standard on exactly how government support should be done.

“Libraries whose spaces are being used to cater to and bolster our engagement with local art! This is how it should be done!!,” they wrote.

Promising an engaging afternoon dedicated to community building, the free-entrance event will feature book signings, comics readings, and exclusive meet-and-greet sessions with fan-favorite Filipino comic creators Patricia Ramos, Maria Maranan, Aly Quilantang, RH Quilantang, Vaughn Pinpin, Tristan Yuvienco, Totie Abad, Tish Nicolas, Lucas Lacorte, Tonicci Paulino, and Carlos Jose San Juan, MD.

Featuring promotional art by Maycen Hermes Yap and championed by the movements Buy Filipino Komiks and Support Local Creators, the collaboration ensures that discovering and supporting the vibrant Philippine indie art scene remains highly accessible to the public.

With the mounting pressure of AI-generated works on human artists, the Philippine creative economy depends on grassroots initiatives to drive their sector forward. Even so, without institutional funding for the arts, human artists are left to fend through project-based work, high table fees for low-market conventions, and commissions that do not secure human artists against piracy and unauthorized digital scraping and/or AI model training.
