The beauty queen demands empathy and accountability from government officials during worsening public health crises.
Actress-turned-beauty queen Teresita “Winwyn” Marquez has spoken out against what she described as a troubling attitude among certain public servants, calling for greater empathy, urgency, and accountability during crises.
In a series of social media posts, Marquez questioned how some government officials communicate with the public, particularly amid disasters and emergencies.
“Ako lang po ba, or parang may something talaga sa ibang public servants lately? The way they talk and present themselves… parang kasalanan pa ng mga tao for expecting help after nila malubog sa baha?” she wrote.
Marquez stressed that citizens are not necessarily demanding instant solutions, but rather compassion and a genuine sense of urgency from those in authority.
“Read the room. You’re speaking to people you’re supposed to serve. Hindi naman instant solution ang hinihingi ‘diba? Konting empathy, urgency, at humility lang sana,” she added. “Talk to them properly. Find solutions. Work with the people instead of making them feel like they’re the problem.”
For Marquez, public service should remain centered on the welfare of the people, reminding officials that “public service is called service for a reason.”
In a separate post, Marquez expressed frustration over systemic gaps exposed by recurring disasters.
“Nakakaiyak. Nakakagalit. Nakakapagod,” she stated, emphasizing that no family should lose a loved one due to official negligence or incompetence. “Hindi dapat ganito. Walang pamilyang dapat mawalan ng mahal sa buhay dahil sa kapabayaan, incompetence, at kasakiman ng mga taong nasa posisyon at dapat naglilingkod sa taumbayan. People deserve better!”
While acknowledging that natural disasters are unpredictable, Marquez pointed out that proper preparation, stronger infrastructure, and proactive governance can significantly reduce their impact.
“Mother Nature can be unpredictable. We cannot control when disasters happen or how powerful they can become. But we can prepare. We can build better systems. We can act before it’s too late,” she said. “Hindi natin kontrolado ang kalikasan, pero may mga bagay na kaya nating paghandaan at maiwasan…..kung ginagawa lang nang maayos ang trabaho.”
Marquez, daughter of veteran actress Alma Moreno and former Parañaque mayor Joey Marquez, holds a unique perspective given her family’s background in both entertainment and public administration. Her statements highlight growing calls for government leaders to address public crises with humility, speed, and real accountability.
