Metro Manila Subway cuts Valenzuela-NAIA travel to 40 mins—but not until 2032

Construction is 60% complete and expected to finish in the last quarter of 2031, says transportation secretary.

Travel time from Valenzuela City to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport may be cut to just 40 minutes through the Metro Manila Subway—but that won’t happen until 2032.

Construction on the NAIA Terminal 3 station of the Metro Manila Subway Project broke ground on September 17.

The Department of Transportation unveiled digital renders of the 2.413-km NAIA station on September 18, depicting plans for an underground station that will connect to the airport’s domestic terminal.

The 33-km, 17-station Metro Manila Subway Project connects East Valenzuela to Bicutan, running through Quezon City, Pasig City, Taguig City, and Pasay City. The NAIA T3 station will be separated from the main track.

Despite assurances of faster travel time across the nation’s capital, the Metro Manila Subway will only be fully operational by 2032—that is, if all things go according to plan and there are no delays, which tend to happen often, especially with government projects.

Though construction is already 60% complete, DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez said construction on the subway is slated to finish in the last quarter of 2031. Construction began in 2019 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and right-of-way issues.
