From Ryan Bang and Yeng Constantino to iconic 90s tandems, here are unforgettable showbiz almosts.

The Ryan Bang-Yeng Constantino saga has Filipinos back in their hopeless-romantic era.

During Yeng’s 20th anniversary concert at the Araneta Coliseum on August 29, the singer opened up about her past with Ryan, revealing that she had a huge crush on him and would even treat him on dates because she liked him so much. She also revealed that Ryan had “seenzoned” her at the time.

The revelation hit differently when Ryan later recalled their almost-romance on “It’s Showtime.” The TV host became emotional as he remembered how Yeng accepted him when he was still starting out, saying he wondered if he would ever find someone like her again. “It turned out I had a chance with her,” he had said.

The story wasn’t exactly a painful breakup since they never officially became a couple. But that’s what made the internet go feral over the possibility of what could have been. It was a classic TOTGA, or “The One That Got Away,” served with a very Filipino side of sayang, something the Pinoy crowd just can’t resist.

Our identity as hopeless romantics has inevitably resulted in Philippine pop culture giving us plenty of pairings that left audiences bitin instead of bitter.

Here are some of our favorites.

Marvin Agustin × Jolina Magdangal

Before they were “Ex Ex Lovers,” Marvin Agustin and Jolina Magdangal were one of the defining love teams of the ’90s. Their chemistry carried them through movies, television, and countless kilig moments, making “MarJo” one of the most recognizable pairings of their generation.

Unlike the usual love-team breakup story, however, Marvin and Jolina eventually remained close friends. Their chemistry was still intact when they reunited for the 2025 film Ex Ex Lovers, which Marvin and Jolina described as their “dream project.”

Today, the two have settled comfortably into their friendship, and their reunion in the upcoming series “Mommy Guard” is proving that the MarJo magic never really disappeared.

John Prats × Heart Evangelista

Before Heart became a fashion icon and John entered his director era, the two were young stars whose “G-Mik” tandem eventually turned into a real-life romance.

The two recently revisited that chapter on Heart’s “Heart World,” where they talked about their relationship and their status as each other’s first loves. John admitted that he was simply too young to understand how to be a boyfriend at the time. “First girlfriend ko si Heart,” he recalled.

More than two decades later, the two are happily living separate lives, with John married to Isabel Oli and Heart married to Chiz Escudero. But their 2026 reunion proved there is still plenty of warmth between the former couple, and just enough nostalgia for fans to look back at what could have been.

Kristine Hermosa × Jericho Rosales

Kristine Hermosa and Jericho Rosales were one of the biggest romantic pairings of early-2000s Philippine television, both on and off screen. Their chemistry, especially in projects like “Pangako Sa ’Yo,” made them one of the era’s most bankable tandems.

Their real-life relationship eventually ended, but without becoming defined by public bitterness. Kristine has called Jericho her first love, while Jericho has said his song “Pusong Ligaw” was about her.

Years later, both have built separate lives and families, with Kristine married to Oyo Sotto and Jericho continuing his acting career. Still, their tandem remains one of those chapters in Philippine showbiz that instantly brings back early-2000s kilig.

Judy Ann Santos × Wowie de Guzman

Before today’s love teams dominated local entertainment, Judy Ann Santos and Wowie de Guzman were among the young pairings audiences loved watching together.

Their tandem became especially popular in the ’90s, with their youthful chemistry making them a familiar onscreen pair. Though their love team eventually ended, it remained a memorable part of ’90s Philippine showbiz.

The two eventually went separate ways, with Judy Ann building a long-running career in television and film while Wowie stepped away from the spotlight. Still, Judy Ann remains open to working with him again, leaving fans to wonder what a new Juday-Wowie project might look like.

Slater Young × Rachelle Ann Go

Slater Young and Rachelle Ann Go may not have the iconic love-team history of some names on this list, but their relationship remains one of those early showbiz romances fans remember fondly.

The two dated from 2013 to 2014 before going their separate ways as Rachelle pursued opportunities abroad. Slater later said her move to London for “Miss Saigon” may have contributed to their breakup.

Years later, Rachelle spoke warmly about Slater, and both moved forward with their respective lives and careers. Their story may not have ended in a grand reunion, but perhaps that is what makes it a memorable “what if.”

From Ryan and Yeng’s almost-romance to the love teams that defined entire generations, Filipino pop culture has no shortage of pairings that left us wondering what could have been.
