Soul Siren Nina reflects on lasting fan support during her anniversary repeat concert at Newport.
For Nina, “Love Moves in Mysterious Ways” has grown beyond being one of her signature songs. Years after she first sang the ballad, she now sees it as her personal theme song for the fans who have stayed with her and continued to embrace her music.
The singer shared the deeper meaning behind the song as she celebrated two decades of “Nina Live!” and returned to the Newport Performing Arts Theater on Thursday, Sept. 24, for “NINA XX: The Anniversary Celebration: The Repeat.”
“When I first sang it, my interpretation was, ‘hindi mo alam when love is going to come. Kapag hindi mo hinahanap, darating. Andiyan na lang. Love is everywhere’,” Nina said, recalling how she initially understood the song as being about romantic love that arrives unexpectedly.
Years later, however, Nina said the song now carries a more personal meaning. “It has actually become my theme song for everyone,” she said, adding that “everyone” means the people who have supported her throughout her career.
“Kasi sobrang misteryoso rin ng pagmamahal nila sa akin. Hanggang ngayon, nandyan pa rin sila. Dumadami ang nagmamahal sa akin. That everybody’s love for me is very mysterious,” Nina said.
That enduring support has also allowed Nina’s music to cross generations.
The singer said she is particularly grateful to the parents who were already fans of “Nina Live!” when they were still single and have since introduced her music to their own children.
“I have to thank the parents talaga,” Nina said.
She recalled meeting younger fans who would tell her that their mothers or fathers were the ones who loved her music first. Rather than feeling offended by being identified as a parent’s favorite, Nina said she welcomes the connection.
Nina also feels that she has changed in one significant way since her “Nina Live!” days: she is now more confident performing in front of large audiences.
“Kasi mahiyaan talaga akong tao. Pero ngayon, medyo relaxed na ako to sing in front of a lot of people,” she said.
While her pre-concert routines remain largely the same, Nina said she now feels more at ease onstage.
That confidence was on display once again when she returned to Newport on Sept. 24 for “NINA XX: The Repeat,” following the success of her anniversary concert in May.
The repeat featured special guests Christian Bautista, Top Suzara, and Thor Dulay. Concert director Calvin Neria previously revealed that around 80 percent of the songs would be different from the May show, including “Nina Live!” tracks that were not performed during the first concert.
Twenty years after “Nina Live!” became a defining chapter in her career, Nina continues to sing the songs that brought generations of listeners together.
